History

Although I founded Hughes Cattle Company in 1991, the history of my company extends much farther back.  As a fourth generation cattleman, I knew from the time I was just a little boy that raising cattle and being a steward of the land was my lifelong dream.   While growing up in the dairy business alongside my father Herschel Hughes and grandfather Arthur Hughes, I learned to appreciate the business and the people that make this profession what it truly is.  I was first introduced to the business side of the industry at age seven.  Dad gave me my first beef heifer after a snake bit her mother, leaving her an orphan.  I cared for her -watching her grow, raising calf after calf, building my herd and foundation for the cattle business.  Everything I have now all goes back to good ole’ Brammy.

As I grew and so did my herd, I realized that I liked the beef business even better than the dairy aspect.  I graduated from Barren County High School and then received a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture at Western Kentucky University in 1991.  I continued in the dairy business with my dad but retained every heifer in my herd until I could begin Hughes Cattle Company all on my own.  The property which is now our headquarters was purchased in 1993 and I have built this expansive farm by purchasing three other large farms that joined it since then.    My company, which includes my wife and two young daughters and loyal employees, continues to grow and we now have a very large cow /calf operation specializing in replacement females due to my love for developing quality breeding stock.

I am proud to be a fourth generation cattleman who derives his sole income from the cattle business.  I have fulfilled that lifelong dream that began with the little boy tagging along with Dad.  My past in this industry is just as significant to me as the future.  I treasure tradition, relationships -old and new - and look forward to sharing my passion for quality beef cattle with you.
